Why Your Bra Sags by Evening

SHAPE bras for extra support and a heavier bust

The short answer: a bra sags by evening because the band was too loose to begin with. After a few hours the band has stretched a little more, the straps are carrying all the weight, and the cup drops. Lift comes from the band holding the cup against the body, not from the straps and not from a wire. Fix the band, and the 6 pm sag goes.

In our survey of 651 women, 59 percent said the cups do not hold. Most of them were not wearing a bad bra. They were wearing a loose one.

What happens between 9 am and 6 pm

  1. The band warms and relaxes. Any band loosens slightly with body heat. A snug band has room for that; a loose band does not.
  2. The straps take over. Once the band stops holding, the straps carry the bust. They stretch, the shoulders round, and the cup slides down.
  3. The cup empties at the top. What looks like "my bra sags" is the cup sitting lower than the bust it is meant to hold.

The two-minute check

Put the bra on the loosest hook. Loosen the straps fully. If the bra drops, the band is doing nothing and the size is wrong. It should hold on its own with the straps slack. Then run the five-sign fit test.

What to change

  • The band first. Snug, two fingers under it, level at the back. On a seamless style, between two letters go up one; the knit gives the cup room without loosening the band.
  • Then the structure. For a fuller bust, a wide underband and a deep cup: Sure Cover Bra (M to 3XL), Seamless Contour Bra (M to 3XL), Plus Size Sculpting Bra (XL to 5XL). Here is where lift really comes from.
  • Then the age of the bra. A bra worn daily lasts 6 to 9 months. After that the band has stretched for good, whatever the size.

Questions women ask us

Should I tighten the straps?

No. Tight straps are the symptom. Tighten the band, or size it down; let the straps rest.

Would a wire stop the sag?

No. A wire shapes the cup; the band lifts. A wired bra with a loose band sags exactly the same, and digs as well.

My bra fit last year. Why does it sag now?

The band has stretched, or your body has changed. Re-measure; it takes two minutes (how to measure at home).

Which bra holds longest in a day?

The Longwear Bra is built for it, and the Sure Cover's wide band is why women with back pain choose it.
