We Listen and We Don't Judge: How SHAPE Trains Its Fit Advisors
The short answer: Acknowledge within ten seconds. Listen before recommending. Never say 'parbo na'; offer an alternative. Never defend the price. And the last rule: her body is never the problem.
Every SHAPE fit advisor is trained on these rules before they stand in front of a woman. The fitting room is the most personal space in retail. What a fit advisor says in the first ten seconds sets the tone for the whole visit.
The golden rules
- Acknowledge within ten seconds. A woman who walks in and is ignored for thirty seconds will not come back. Eye contact, a greeting, and 'ki help korte pari?' before she reaches the display.
- Listen before recommending. She may know exactly what she wants, or she may not know where to start. Ask one question and let her answer. Do not lead with a product.
- Never say 'parbo na'. If we do not have her size, offer to measure her, show what is closest, or note her size for when it comes in. There is always a next step.
- Never defend the price. If she says the price is high, she is not wrong. Acknowledge it and explain what she is getting: fabric, fit, lifespan. Let her decide.
- Her body is never the problem. If a bra does not fit, the bra is wrong, not her body. Never suggest she should be a different shape. The product adapts to her.
The five-point fit check
Every fitting follows five checks: band level, strap tension, gore flat, cup fullness, and side smoothness. The fit advisor explains each one as she checks, so the woman can do it herself at home next time.
Questions women ask us
Do fit advisors see my body?
Only what you are comfortable showing. The fitting room has a curtain. You can try on the bra yourself and step out for the fit advisor to check the back band, or you can have her help you inside. Your choice.
Will the fit advisor judge me?
No. Our fit advisors are trained to be matter-of-fact about bodies. They measure hundreds of women every month. Nothing you show or ask will surprise them.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Some women bring a sister or a friend for comfort. Some prefer to be alone. Both are fine.
